It’s a Tuesday afternoon and your eight-year-old comes home from school limping. A tumble on the playground has left a deep gash on his knee and your instinct is to get him to a doctor — fast. Or perhaps your daughter wakes up on a Saturday morning with a raging toothache, and you spend the next hour frantically trying to find a dentist who is open over the weekend. For many South African parents, moments like these quickly become financial decisions as much as medical ones.

The good news is that there is a practical, affordable middle ground. In this guide, we explain what health insurance for children looks like in South Africa, what Momentum Health4Me covers for your kids, what it costs, and how to decide whether it is the right fit for your family.

Why South African Children Need Health Cover

Children are, by nature, frequent users of healthcare. From the endless stream of ear infections and chest colds in the early years to sports injuries, dental decay and vision problems as they grow, the reality is that even healthy children need regular medical attention.

The South African Child Gauge 2023, published by the Children’s Institute at the University of Cape Town, highlights that access to quality healthcare remains deeply unequal across income groups. Children from lower- and middle-income households are most likely to fall through the gap between an overwhelmed public sector and unaffordable private medical schemes.

The most common reasons parents seek medical care for school-going children include:

    • Playground and sports injuries — sprains, fractures, lacerations and concussions
    • Respiratory infections — tonsillitis, bronchitis, asthma flare-ups and pneumonia
    • Dental problems — tooth decay and infections are among the most prevalent health issues in school-aged children
    • Vision problems — undetected refractive errors are a leading cause of poor school performance
    • Chronic conditions — including asthma, epilepsy and Type 1 diabetes, which require ongoing management and medication

The South African Dental Association (SADA) has highlighted that dental caries (tooth decay) is one of the most common chronic conditions affecting South African children, yet it is almost entirely preventable with regular professional dental care. A study published in the South African Dental Journal (SADJ) found caries prevalence among six-year-olds ranging between 40% and 60% in many communities, with inadequate access to professional dental care identified as a primary contributing factor. This is why kids’ dental coverage is not a luxury — it is a fundamental part of preventative care.

Momentum Health4Me was specifically designed to offer cost-effective healthcare cover to individuals earning less than R40,000 per month, making meaningful access possible for families who would otherwise go without. It follows a building block approach, so you can combine day-to-day and major medical event benefits to match your family’s needs and budget.

What Does Health4Me Cover for Your Children?

Health4Me’s cover is structured across two layers: day-to-day benefits (Bronze, Silver and Gold options) and major medical event benefits (Base and Standard options, which must be selected together with a day-to-day option). Here is what each layer means for your child in practice.

Kids’ Dental Coverage and Eye Care: Why These Matter More Than You Think

    Dental Cover for Children

According to the South African Dental Association (SADA), dental caries (tooth decay) is the most prevalent chronic disease among South African children. A study in the South African Dental Journal (SADJ) found caries prevalence in six-year-olds of between 40% and 60% across many communities, with limited access to professional care identified as the primary driver. Left untreated, tooth decay leads to pain, infection, missed school days and, in serious cases, hospitalisation.

Source: South African Dental Journal (SADJ); South African Dental Association (SADA)

Health4Me’s dental benefit is available on all three day-to-day options — Bronze, Silver and Gold — and covers treatment at any dentist on the Dental Network. For children, this includes:

    • Fillings — treating cavities before they become painful abscesses
    • Extractions — for damaged or infected teeth
    • Infection control — essential when dental infections spread rapidly in children
    • Cleaning and polishing — the preventative care that helps avoid larger problems
    • Emergency dentistry — for when your child chips or fractures a tooth over the weekend

Note that specialised dentistry — including braces, crowns, implants, root canals and dentures — is not covered. Cover is provided in accordance with Dental Network protocols and waiting periods apply. To find a network dentist, visit our Dental Network list.

    Optometry (Eye Care) for Children

According to Optometry South Africa, an estimated one in five school-going children has an undetected vision problem. Uncorrected refractive errors — short-sightedness (myopia), long-sightedness (hyperopia) and astigmatism — are among the leading causes of poor academic performance, yet they are entirely correctable with spectacles. Many children simply do not know they cannot see properly because they have no frame of reference.

Source: Optometry South Africa — optometry.org.za

Health4Me covers one comprehensive eye test and one pair of clear standard single vision or bi-focal lenses with a standard frame every two years, at any optometrist on the Optical Network. This benefit is available on Bronze, Silver and Gold. Contact lenses, tinted lenses, hard coating and sunglasses are not covered. Waiting periods apply.

For many families, a biennial eye test is the difference between a child who struggles silently in class and one who can actually read the board.

    The Parent’s Health Cover Checklist

Not sure whether Health4Me is right for your family? Work through this checklist. If any of these apply to you, it is worth considering cover for your children.

✔  My child sees a GP more than twice a year. Unlimited Network GP visits and unlimited Hello Doctor consultations mean you never have to weigh up cost against your child’s health.
✔  My child is school-going and physically active. Playground and sports injuries are common. The Base major medical option provides up to R500,000 in-hospital accident cover per event at a private hospital; the Standard option extends this to R1.5 million.
✔  My child has a chronic condition such as asthma, epilepsy or Type 1 diabetes. Health4Me covers 27 chronic conditions, including medication, monitoring pathology and pre-authorised specialist referrals.
✔  My child has not had a dental check-up this year. Basic dentistry — fillings, extractions, cleaning and infection control — is included on Bronze, Silver and Gold at any Dental Network dentist.
✔  My child has not had an eye test in the past two years. An undetected vision problem can hold your child back at school. Health4Me covers one eye test and one pair of standard lenses every two years, at any Optical Network optometrist.
✔  I need access to a qualified doctor outside of surgery hours. Hello Doctor gives your family 24/7 access to a GP by chat, phone or video call — free and unlimited, via the Momentum App or WhatsApp.
✔  I want to earn rewards for looking after my family’s health. Health4Me members get free access to More4Me (up to R80/month in airtime, data and vouchers) and Multiply Engage (discounts at Checkers, Virgin Active, Nu Metro and more).
✔  I cannot afford a full medical scheme but need more than just the public health system. Health4Me is specifically designed for individuals earning under R40,000/month. Children’s premiums start from R423/month. This is real, meaningful healthcare access at a price that works for real South African families.

These are the factors to consider when choosing the right health insurance plan for children:

    1

Consider the age and health needs of your childrenAssess what kind of medical services your child is going to need. For instance, will they need to see a specialist or receive chronic medication? Infants and very young children (under the age of five years) may require frequent doctor visits for check-ups and vaccinations. Older children may have developed specific healthcare needs related to family history or chronic conditions, like myopia.

    2

Evaluate the family’s budget and financial capabilitiesFind a balance between cover and affordability. Consider monthly premiums, deductibles, co-payments, and out-of-pocket maximums.

    3

Pay attention to cover details and benefits offeredLook for key cover areas essential for children, like preventive care, vaccinations, emergency services, hospitalisation, prescription medications, specialist consultations, and mental health services. It’s also worth exploring the exact nature of cover for dental and vision care, as these areas require special attention for your child’s development.

    4

View the available plans and request quotesCompare our health insurance plans to explore each plan in more detail. Review each plan’s details: consider cover options, network providers, and costs. Pay attention to limitations or exclusions and the process for seeking medical care and submitting claims.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Is health insurance worth it for children in South Africa?

For most families, yes. Children are frequent users of healthcare — from GP visits and dental check-ups to sports injuries and management of chronic conditions like asthma and epilepsy. Without cover, every one of these visits comes out of pocket.

Health4Me provides meaningful cover — including unlimited GP visits, 24/7 virtual GP access via Hello Doctor, dental cover, optometry and pathology — from as little as R423 per month per child on the Bronze day-to-day option. Health4Me is a health insurance product, not a registered medical scheme.

What does health insurance cover for children in South Africa?

On Momentum Health4Me, children are covered for unlimited GP visits (in-person and virtual via Hello Doctor), acute and chronic medication, 27 chronic conditions (including asthma, epilepsy and diabetes), pathology, radiology, basic dentistry, an eye test and standard lenses every two years, and a flu vaccination.

Adding a major medical event option (Base or Standard) extends cover to accident cover of up to R1.5 million per event at a private hospital, hospital cash of R500 or R1,000 per day, emergency transportation, and a funeral benefit. Waiting periods and pre-authorisation requirements apply to certain benefits.

How much is health insurance for a child in South Africa?

On Momentum Health4Me (2026 premiums), child cover starts from R423 per month on the Bronze day-to-day option and ranges up to R697 per month for Gold + Standard major medical event cover. All premiums are exempt from VAT and reviewed annually.

A practical mid-range option is Silver + Base at R602 per month per child, which includes all day-to-day benefits plus accident cover of up to R500,000 per event and R500 per day in hospital cash.

What does kids’ dental coverage include on Health4Me?

Health4Me covers basic dentistry — fillings, extractions, infection control, cleaning and polishing of teeth — at any dentist on the Dental Network. This is included on Bronze, Silver and Gold day-to-day options.

Specialised dentistry such as braces, crowns, implants, root canals and dentures is not covered under Health4Me. Waiting periods apply and cover is provided in accordance with Dental Network protocols.

Does Health4Me cover school sports injuries?

Yes. The major medical event benefits (Base and Standard) include accident cover for external, unexpected events that require immediate medical treatment at a private hospital. This covers a casualty benefit of up to R30,000 per event, plus an in-hospital benefit of up to R500,000 (Base) or R1,500,000 (Standard) per event.

Cover also includes emergency transportation, diagnostic scans (MRI and CT), take-home medication, prosthetics, assistive devices and rehabilitation such as physiotherapy and occupational therapy. Pre-authorisation is required. A maximum of R2.5 million (Base) or R5 million (Standard) is payable per member per year.

Can I add my children to my Health4Me plan?

Children are added as dependants on the principal member’s Health4Me plan. Child premiums are listed separately and start from R423 per month per child. For step-by-step guidance on applying, visit our FAQ page or speak to a Bloom consultant.
