What does an optometrist do?

These healthcare professionals are trained to examine, diagnose and treat conditions relating to your eyes. While they are able to perform certain medical treatments and minor surgical procedures related to the eye, the main reason to visit an optometrist is to have your vision checked so you can be prescribed corrective eyeglasses, contact lenses or any other sort of visual aid that will help you see better.

How does an optometrist check your eyes?

The optometrist will need to inspect your inner and outer eye using an ophthalmoscope that is shone through the pupil of your eye. This will pick up any specific eye problems. The optometrist will also evaluate the quality of your vision by testing your eye coordination, long-distance and short-distance vision. They will then prescribe corrective lenses in the form of eyeglasses or contacts based on your individual eye assessment. Should the optometrist pick up any serious eye conditions, like glaucoma, they will refer you to a specialist eye doctor, known as an ophthalmologist.
It’s especially important to book an appointment with an optometrist if you are suffering from any of the following complaints:

  • Abnormal or impaired vision, especially if this has occurred over a relatively short space of time. Your vision could be deteriorating and it’s advisable to get a visual aid as soon as possible.
  • Persistent eye pain. You could have an underlying condition and an optometrist will be able to evaluate the problem and provide a diagnosis for treatment or refer you to a specialist.
  • Headaches. This is often a warning sign of impaired vision. If your eyesight has deteriorated or is failing, this will put a strain on your eyes resulting in painful headaches.
